Weekend Review: Getting our Move On

A couple weeks ago, I mentioned that we were taking on a new home improvement at our house. After a wanting to do it for a while, we decided to refinish the hardwoods on our second floor. We've been wanting to redo our floors since this post about our tax refund from last year. After reflecting on that post, I think it is kind of interesting that we have now tackled two out of the three things on that list--the wrought iron fence and the floors. All that is left is the backyard, but hopefully that'll come soon. ;) I promise that I'll give you a full detailed post on the whole refinishing process (a process that I like to call "hardwood hell") but it'll have to wait since we aren't quite done and I want to give the whole process a full review...sorry! What a tease! In the meantime, I'll update you all on how we'd be living for the past few weeks.

Everything we couldn't pack, we had to move downstairs...

With us being exiled from the upstairs we set up camp in the living room with the aero mattress. After a couple days it was getting really uncomfortable. I apologize to any guests we have made sleep on it or any guests than may sleep on it in the future. I realize it sucks and we need to get a proper guest bed sometime soon...

Our clothes in suitcases and laundry hamper in the dining room. #hollalivinginsqualor

Despite all of the crap on the first floor, that didn't prevent us from doing stuff around the house. I spotted this mirror for under $30 at Homegoods. What a steal!

So of course I put Justin to working in hanging it since it's his most favorite thing to do. ;)

I also thought I would be a good time to hang these wall sconces that we got for our wedding shower many years ago.

Voila! Again not properly styled, but deal with it. We got some cute candles to go with our sconces. I'll have to show you in a different post. :)

Justin replacing the ceiling fan light. The honey-do list never ends does it?

Random picture of Derby grinning ear to ear! #nobraces

We also helped our friends move into their new place. Will the couch fit?

The Sanchezes (Sancheeses? ;) taking a break!

All of us awaiting our reward for assisting in the move--Taylor Gourmet!

After moving, since we were in the neighborhood, we figured we might as well stop by Union Market. It has been open for about a year now and we hadn't checked it out yet.

One of the butchers was selling oxtail. I had never seen it in its whole form. Kinda weird but my mouth was still watering from the thought of kare kare (aka: Filipino oxtail stew in a peanut sauce)...

A shot of the inside. Definitely room for growth (I love me some Reading Terminal Market!) but still a good addition to the neighborhood and city!

I was in an ice cream kind of mood but a  cupcake from Curbside Cupcakes will suffice.

Our weekend was jam packed! That's a review of my busy weekend in a nutshell! Sorry for the lame-o conclusion...I figured I needed to say something in order to finish this old a$$ post!

Weekend Review: Movin' on Up (and Away)

Happy Monday to you! I hope you had a good weekend! I thought that this weekend was going to be more chill than last weekend since we weren't going out of town, but it was actually pretty busy!

Our friend (Maneater) Meter accepted a new position at Colorado State University and is leaving at the end of the month. She first lived here several years ago, moved to Florida, but then came back! She was actually one of the only females in our group (besides me) when Justin first moved to DC nearly six years ago. She's leaving us again but we promised to visit her in Colorado, especially since Justin and I have never been there!

A shot (no pun intended) of her going away party at Union Pub Friday night...

Although we stayed out later than we should have we had a busy day planned on Saturday. We had to transfer the title/registration on Justin's car from Kentucky to D.C. The first thing we had to do was get an emissions test...the line went around the block so we had to we had to wait a while. I'm sure all these idling cars, waiting to be tested, couldn't be doing anything good for the environment. :(

Next, we had to go to the DMV. Dun-dun-dun! There were lines galore! A line to get into the parking lot, a line to get into the building, and line to grab a number, etc. Here's a shot of the packed waiting room.

Luckily I had plenty of reading material!

When we finally got home I was starving so I fried up some lumpia (Filipino egg rolls) while I watched the Beyonce documentary I had on DVR...

Yummy fried, carb-y goodness! As you all know on Friday, I announced that I would be participating in my Crossfit Box's Nutrition Challenge so I ate stuff like this...

And this...

...all weekend. After all, I wouldn't be eating horrible like that for another two months so I had to properly say good-bye! ;) On Sunday, we helped our friend Jenn move out of her apartment. It definitely wasn't as traumatizing as other times we've moved friends. With all the help she had we were able to move her stuff in and out quite quickly.

Here's a shot of the new fancy apartment (and all of us relaxing post-move)!

What do you do this weekend? Do you ever have weekends you think will be relaxing, but turn out to be busier than you thought in the end?

Moving Day

At this point our kitchen is still not ready, it is about 80% done. However, Justin and I will be out of town the following two weekends so it was necessary for us to move in today. Everything is super dusty and our kitchen isn't usable, but the show must go on.

Here is the vehicle we used to transport our stuff. Surprisingly it was pretty easy finding a spot to park that thing.  Since we moved out of Justin's apartment last fall, this truck was full of mostly my stuff and our unopened bridal shower/wedding gifts. We also stole borrowed some furniture from my parent's place (e.g. the dining room chairs and tables in the basement). They aren't in the greatest condition but we are hoping that they are just a temporary option until we can afford a proper dining room set.

Here's Judy and Justin sitting on our stoop (wow, we have a stoop! woohoo!) taking a much needed break.

(**Note: See the stairs leading right to the front door? Supposedly that's bad feng shui. It means that money is going right out the door. Anyone know how to remedy this because this kitchen renovation has definitely been a money pit!**)
And here is the A-Team that helped us move. Otherwise known as siblings, a neighbor, a cousin and a former roomie. I know how much people hate moving so we are totally grateful that we had so much help today!

I think the fact that we moved in half of our stuff beforehand really shortened the time it took us to move in. I think if we move out (whenever that may be) we might not be able to do a self-move, but for now, we are totally happy we have good friends and family to lend a hand!
